Choosing the right wiring

For motorsport Tefzel wire is the right choice. It has better heat and wear resistance and is easier to use in a wiring loom due to a smaller diameter than regular automotive wiring.

The wire thickness is measured in AWG. In the table below are some basic and safe AWG sizes for different components

Battery positive direct10 AWG
Battery negative direct10 AWG
Other battery positive14 AWG
Fuel pump positive 14 AWG
Radiator fan14 AWG
Switched ignition20 AWG
12V 5A Fused20 AWG
Tach output20-24 AWG
Sensors20-24 AWG
Injectors20 AWG

For sensors which send sensitive signals such as the crank, cam and knock sensor it’s recommended to use shielded wiring. These wires contain a conductive sleeve around the signal wire which is connected to a earthing point (battery or ecu depending on the ecu brand).
